Grading Scale

My grading scale for music is as follows:

50%-Participation
25%-Tests and Quizzes
20%-Demonstrated Skills (25% for K-2)
5%- Edmodo Assignments(3rd-5th only)

3rd-5th Grade/K-2nd Grade

100-90 A/E
80-89 B/S
70-79 C/N
60-69 D/U
59-Below F/U

Participation grade is issued based on the percentage the student participated in class. For example, if a student completes all the assignments and participates in all activities scheduled for the day, then they earn a 100 for that class period. Students choosing to only do certain activities will receive a lower percentage. For example, if we have four activities scheduled in one class period and the student chose to attempt only two of the activities then they would earn a 50% for the day because they did only half the work. Students choosing not to do anything for the entire class period will earn a 0% for that class period. If participation continues to be a problem, parents will be contacted via phone or email.

Test and Quiz grades will be issued to assess student's knowledge of a music concept. Some tests and quizzes will be written and some will be oral and some will be given via Edmodo.com. All tests and quizzes will be based on work we do for several weeks, giving students time to prepare. If we are having a test, it will be announced in class the week before we have it. Tests can always be made up. Students can retake a test either before school or after school. Please call to make the necessary arrangements.

Skill grade is issued based on the student's performance of a musical concept. Students will be given ample time to practice concepts in class. They will have more practice time if they choose to work at home. Practice is not mandatory but it does certainly help. Students must at least try and put forth their best effort to earn their skill grade. Once again, we will work on concepts for a few weeks before they are graded. Edmodo is the online program similar to Facebook where students will be given assignments to complete online. Students will have ample time to complete the work. If students do not have a computer with internet access available to them, please speak to Mr. Thomas so the work can be completed at school. Failure to complete the assignment will negatively impact the student's grade in music.

Students, please remember that grading starts the first day of class!
